Understanding the Metrics
Each column measures a different aspect of a cryptocurrency. No single metric tells the whole story — the best choice depends on your specific needs and priorities.
Speed (TPS)
Transactions per second the network can process. Higher is faster, but real-world performance varies with network load. Theoretical maximums often exceed actual throughput.
Average Fee
Typical cost per transaction. Fees can spike during high demand. Layer 2 solutions generally offer much lower fees than Layer 1 chains.
Energy Use
Environmental impact of the consensus mechanism. Proof of Work (Bitcoin) uses significantly more energy than Proof of Stake chains.
Decentralization
How distributed the network's control is. Higher decentralization means greater censorship resistance and security, but often trades off against speed.
Smart Contracts
Whether the blockchain supports programmable applications. Essential for DeFi, NFTs, and decentralized applications.
DeFi Ecosystem
Size and maturity of decentralized finance applications on the chain. "Massive" means billions in TVL with hundreds of protocols.
