Overview

Algorand is a Layer 1 blockchain founded in 2019 by Silvio Micali, a professor at MIT and co-winner of the 2012 Turing Award for his foundational contributions to cryptography, including zero-knowledge proofs and verifiable random functions. Micali designed Algorand to solve the blockchain trilemma — the conventional wisdom that a blockchain cannot simultaneously achieve decentralization, security, and scalability — through a novel Pure Proof of Stake (PPoS) consensus mechanism.

Algorand's Pure Proof of Stake works by randomly and secretly selecting block proposers and committee members for each round using a Verifiable Random Function (VRF). Any ALGO holder can be selected regardless of how much they stake — there is no minimum staking requirement or delegation needed. This random selection happens in microseconds and is completely private: selected participants do not know they have been chosen until they begin their work, and the selection cannot be known by others in advance. This makes it practically impossible for an attacker to target validators before they act, providing strong security guarantees.

The network achieves instant finality, meaning that once a block is added to the chain, it is immediately and irrevocably final — there are no forks, no reorganizations, and no need to wait for multiple confirmations. This property is critical for financial applications where settlement certainty is non-negotiable. Algorand processes approximately 10,000 transactions per second with block finality in under 4 seconds, all while maintaining extremely low fees of $0.001 per transaction.

Algorand has secured several high-profile institutional partnerships. FIFA selected Algorand as its official blockchain platform, and the network has been involved in multiple central bank digital currency (CBDC) pilots, including projects with the Marshall Islands and Italy's banking association.
