Overview
Cronos is the EVM-compatible Layer 1 blockchain built by the Cronos Labs team, closely associated with Crypto.com — one of the world's largest cryptocurrency exchanges. Launched in November 2021, Cronos was designed to be the bridge that brings Crypto.com's massive user base (over 80 million accounts) into the world of decentralized finance, NFTs, and Web3 applications. The chain uses a Proof of Authority consensus mechanism based on Tendermint BFT, enabling fast block times and low transaction costs while maintaining EVM compatibility for easy Solidity smart contract deployment.
The CRO token was originally created for the Crypto.com ecosystem, serving as the native token for Crypto.com Visa card staking tiers, exchange fee discounts, and payment rewards. With the launch of Cronos, CRO also became the gas token for the blockchain, used for transaction fees, staking, and governance. This dual role — powering both a centralized exchange ecosystem and a decentralized blockchain — gives CRO a unique utility profile among cryptocurrency tokens.
Cronos has attracted over 500 DeFi applications, NFT projects, and gaming platforms to its ecosystem, including DeFi protocols like VVS Finance, Tectonic, and Ferro Protocol.
