Gala Games

Gala Games is a blockchain gaming ecosystem founded by Eric Schiermeyer — co-founder of Zynga, the company behind FarmVille — with the mission to give players actual ownership over their in-game items and experiences. Launched in 2020, Gala Games has built a portfolio of games spanning multiple genres while developing its own blockchain infrastructure (GalaChain) to support its growing ecosystem of games, entertainment, and music platforms.

The GALA token serves as the primary medium of exchange across the Gala Games ecosystem. Players use GALA to purchase in-game items, NFTs, and node licenses. Game developers integrate GALA as a reward mechanism, creating play-to-earn economics where skilled or dedicated players can earn tokens with real value. The ecosystem has expanded beyond gaming to include Gala Music (for artists and music NFTs) and Gala Film (for decentralized content creation and distribution).

GalaChain, the project's proprietary blockchain built using Hyperledger Fabric technology, launched to handle the high transaction throughput required by gaming applications while maintaining low costs. This represents a significant infrastructure investment, moving Gala Games from reliance on Ethereum to having its own purpose-built chain. By 2026, Gala Games operates multiple live titles including Town Star, Spider Tanks, and several other games in various stages of development. The project has also faced challenges, including internal legal disputes between co-founders and criticism over the quality and pace of game releases compared to initial promises.
