An Ethereum Layer 2 building the Superchain — a unified network of interoperable rollups.

Overview

Optimism is an Ethereum Layer 2 scaling solution using Optimistic Rollup technology, launched in December 2021 by Optimism PBC (now the Optimism Collective). Like Arbitrum, it processes transactions off-chain and posts data to Ethereum for security. But Optimism has differentiated itself through an ambitious vision: the Superchain — a network of interoperable Layer 2 chains that all share a common codebase, sequencing layer, and communication protocol.

The Optimism tech stack is called the OP Stack, an open-source, modular framework for building rollups. The OP Stack has been adopted by major players including Coinbase (for its Base L2), Worldcoin, Sony (for Soneium), and many others. This adoption strategy means Optimism's technology powers not just one chain, but an expanding network of chains that can communicate natively with each other.

Optimism's governance model is uniquely innovative. It uses a bicameral system: the Token House (OP holders who vote on protocol upgrades and incentives) and the Citizens' House (a soul-bound identity-based chamber focused on allocating retroactive public goods funding). This Retroactive Public Goods Funding (RetroPGF) mechanism has distributed tens of millions of dollars to developers, educators, and projects that have contributed positively to the Ethereum ecosystem.

Why It Matters

Optimism's Superchain vision could define the future of multi-chain Ethereum. Rather than a fragmented landscape of competing L2s, the Superchain proposes a unified network where multiple chains share security, communication, and standards. The OP Stack's adoption by Coinbase (Base), Sony, and others validates the idea that the next wave of blockchain infrastructure will be built on shared, open-source rollup technology. Optimism's RetroPGF model is also pioneering new ways to fund public goods.

How It Works

The Basics

Optimism uses the same Optimistic Rollup approach as Arbitrum: transactions are executed off-chain, and compressed transaction data is posted to Ethereum. A sequencer orders transactions and provides fast confirmations.

Pros & Cons

Pros
  • The OP Stack powers Base (Coinbase), Worldcoin, Sony Soneium, and a growing number of L2s
  • Superchain vision creates network effects — more chains means more interoperability
  • Innovative governance with Token House and Citizens' House bicameral model
  • RetroPGF distributes millions to fund public goods and ecosystem development
  • Full EVM compatibility with low fees and fast transaction confirmations
Cons
  • Smaller DeFi TVL than Arbitrum on the Optimism L2 chain itself
  • Seven-day withdrawal period for bridging funds back to Ethereum (without fast bridges)
  • Centralized sequencer, though shared sequencing for the Superchain is in development
  • OP token inflation for ecosystem incentives dilutes existing holders
  • Superchain interoperability is still being built out and not yet fully realized

Use Cases

  • DeFi protocols (Velodrome, Synthetix, Aave) with low fees on the Optimism L2
  • Building custom L2 chains using the open-source OP Stack
  • Retroactive public goods funding for open-source developers and community projects
  • Cross-chain applications that span multiple OP Stack chains in the Superchain
  • Governance participation in one of DeFi's most innovative governance experiments
