Worldcoin
A global identity and financial network using iris-scanning biometrics to distribute cryptocurrency to every human on Earth.
Overview
Worldcoin is a digital identity and cryptocurrency project co-founded by Sam Altman (CEO of OpenAI), Max Novendstern, and Alex Blania. Launched in 2023, the project aims to create a global proof-of-personhood system called World ID by scanning individuals' irises using a custom hardware device called the Orb. Once verified, users receive WLD tokens as a form of universal basic income, and their World ID serves as a privacy-preserving credential proving they are a unique human — not a bot or duplicate account.
The World ID system uses zero-knowledge proofs to verify uniqueness without revealing personal identity. When an Orb scans a person's iris, it generates a unique mathematical hash (called an IrisCode) that is stored in a decentralized manner. The actual iris image is deleted. This IrisCode can then be used to verify that a person is human and hasn't already registered, without linking the verification to any personal information. The system was designed specifically to address the problem of distinguishing humans from AI bots online.
Worldcoin operates on World Chain, an Ethereum Layer 2 network built using the OP Stack (the same technology behind Optimism). The WLD token is used for governance, transactions on World Chain, and as the distributed currency for verified humans. By 2025, Worldcoin had verified over 10 million World IDs across dozens of countries, deployed thousands of Orb devices, and developed a growing ecosystem of applications that leverage World ID for sybil-resistant authentication.
As AI-generated content and bot accounts proliferate, the ability to prove that you are a unique human online becomes increasingly critical. Worldcoin's World ID system offers one of the most scalable approaches to proof-of-personhood — a building block for everything from fair token airdrops and democratic online governance to AI-resistant social media verification. The project's ambition to reach every human on Earth and distribute cryptocurrency universally makes it one of the most audacious experiments in crypto history.
How It Works
The Basics
Worldcoin uses a custom biometric device called the Orb to scan users' irises and generate a unique IrisCode. This code is verified against all existing codes to ensure uniqueness. Zero-knowledge proofs allow users to prove they are verified humans without revealing their identity.
Pros & Cons
- Solves the critical problem of distinguishing humans from AI bots using biometric verification
- Privacy-preserving design using zero-knowledge proofs — iris images are deleted after scanning
- Backed by major investors and co-founded by Sam Altman (CEO of OpenAI)
- Own Layer 2 blockchain (World Chain) built on proven OP Stack technology
- Ambitious global distribution goal with millions of users already verified worldwide
- Iris scanning raises significant privacy and surveillance concerns despite ZK proof design
- Regulatory scrutiny and bans in several countries over biometric data collection practices
- Heavy centralization in Orb manufacturing and initial token distribution controlled by the foundation
- Questions about long-term token value given continuous distribution to new verified users
- Reliance on hardware (Orbs) creates scaling bottlenecks and geographic distribution challenges
Use Cases
- Proof-of-personhood verification for online platforms to combat bots and fake accounts
- Fair and sybil-resistant cryptocurrency airdrops and governance voting
- Universal basic income distribution through periodic WLD token grants to verified humans
- Authentication layer for AI-age applications that need to verify human users
- Decentralized identity credential for accessing services without revealing personal information
