yearn.finance
The original DeFi yield aggregator — its vaults auto-route deposits into the best strategies, and its YFI token had a famous zero-premine 'fair launch'.
Overview
Yearn Finance is one of DeFi's original yield aggregators — a protocol that automatically moves users' deposits between lending and yield-farming strategies to chase the best available return. It was created in early 2020 by South African developer Andre Cronje (who later also co-founded the Fantom blockchain), who first built it as iEarn to automate his own yield farming across Aave, Compound, and dYdX.
Yearn's core product is the vault (yVault). A user deposits a single asset; the vault deploys that capital into one or more strategies — supplying to lending markets, providing liquidity, or farming rewards and selling them back into the deposit asset — and the depositor receives a share token representing a growing claim on the vault's balance. Withdrawing burns the share token and returns the original asset plus accumulated yield, minus performance and management fees. Strategies are written and maintained by contributors and can be swapped as market conditions change, so users get professional yield optimization without managing it themselves.
In July 2020 Cronje distributed the governance token, YFI, with no premine, no founder allocation, and no venture-capital sale — every token went to users who provided liquidity during a short window. The tiny supply and pure distribution made YFI a landmark example of a 'fair launch' and turned it into one of DeFi's most iconic governance tokens.
Yearn popularized the idea that yield optimization could be abstracted into a single deposit — a primitive that dozens of later auto-compounding protocols copied. Its July-2020 fair launch became a cultural touchstone for equitable token distribution and influenced how many later projects thought about launches. Yearn also seeded a wider ecosystem of DeFi builders, strategies, and spin-off products.
How It Works
The Basics
A vault accepts one asset and allocates it across whitelisted strategies that generate yield — lending interest, liquidity-provision fees, or farmed-token rewards sold back into the deposited asset.
Pros & Cons
- Automates complex yield farming into a single one-asset deposit
- Strategies are actively maintained and can adapt to changing market conditions
- Famous zero-premine fair launch and community-run governance
- Long track record and a broad ecosystem of vaults and strategies
- Non-custodial and fully open-source
- Returns depend on available DeFi yields, which have compressed since the 2020-21 peak
- Layering strategies on other protocols compounds smart-contract risk — a bug in any integrated protocol can affect a vault
- Performance and management fees reduce net yield
- A very small token supply makes YFI's price highly volatile
- Reliance on a small group of strategists and contributors for new strategies
Use Cases
- Depositing stablecoins or crypto into a vault to earn optimized, auto-compounded yield
- Using YFI to participate in protocol governance
- DAOs and treasuries parking idle assets in vaults for passive yield
- Developers building and running vault strategies
